It depends — Simplified-issue final expense can decline you for certain serious health conditions, but guaranteed-issue final expense cannot deny you within its eligible age band — the trade-off is a two-year graded death benefit for non-accidental death.

What it means

  • Simplified-issue applications ask about a short list of "knock-out" conditions — for example, active cancer treatment, recent stroke or heart attack, dialysis, or terminal diagnoses. A yes to a knock-out question typically means the simplified-issue product declines the application. That is not the end of the road: the applicant is generally eligible for a guaranteed-issue policy from the same or a different carrier.
  • Guaranteed-issue policies, by design, do not deny within the stated age band (typically ages 50–85). The insurer accepts anti-selection risk by attaching a graded death benefit: if the insured dies of a non-accidental cause during the first two policy years, the beneficiary receives a return of premiums plus interest rather than the full face amount. Accidental death is paid in full from day one.
